Boiler Scrappage Scheme announced by Government

The Boiler Scrappage Scheme just launched by the Government, originally announced in the last budget, is expected to cut carbon emissions and make it easier for people to afford more efficient boilers.

New boilers have efficiency ratings of 90 per cent or more meaning that they use less fuel, resulting in lower CO2 emissions and running costs. Renewable heating technologies do not use fossil fuels, reducing CO2 emissions even further. By upgrading your G rated boiler to an A-rated one, your household heating bill should drop by about a quarter - a saving, on average, of around £235 a year.

To address this the Government is offering up to 125,000 households £400 towards the cost of upgrading their boiler (if G-rated or equivalent or worse) to a high efficiency A-rated one or a renewable heating technology.

A useful summary of the Boiler Scrappage Scheme can be found at the Department of Climate Change.

Want to register an interest in the Boiler Scrappage Scheme?

First confirm that your home has a G-rated (or equivalent) boiler, then you can call the ACT ON CO2 advice line on 0800 512 012 or take the Boiler Scrappage Scheme Eligibility Check.

If your boiler does not meet the criteria of this scheme, you may still have access to other types of support. Grants include support for insulating your home or equipping with renewable energy, for example.

The Energy Saving Trust will administer the scheme and claims that its impartiality will allow it to provide impartial advice, information and assurances to customers who are looking to take advantage of the scheme and the financial incentives.

Fraser Winterbottom, chief operating officer at the Energy Saving Trust, said: "We know that people will act on larger energy efficiency measures like replacing boilers when they are both good for the environment and cost effective for them”.

Comprehensive details of the Boiler Scrappage Scheme and how to register can be found at the Energy Savings Trust.
